At 1306 a 7m aluminium boat with 3 POB reported an electrical problem with its engine.  It was positioned 7nm NW of Kohi Point.  Later it managed to reset its engine management system and proceed to Kohi Point.  However, it required assistance to cross the bar if its engine failed again. Sea conditions were clear with outgoing tide and 5-7kt wind from ENE and 0.5m swell. At 1344hr Whakatane Rescue was tasked to assist and was alongside at 1421hr. After a discussion with the boat it was decide that as the engine seemed to be OK Whakatane Rescue would shadow it into port.  However, many surfers were swimming near the bar so Whakatane Rescue went ahead to make sure the surfers got out of the way. At 1426hr both boats were safe
