Capsize – 07/06/2015 – 12:45 to

A kayak was reported to have capsised off Waiotahi Beach.  A 21yr old kayaker was putting out a long line when the kayak capsised.  The kayak washed ashore shortly after but there was no sign of the kayaker.  The sea was becoming rough with a 20kt westerly wind, 1-2m NW swell and an easterly drift on the out-going tide.  Emergency services were notified and Police, RCCNZ, Whakatane Rescue, Opac Rescue, Helicopter, and Ohope Surf Club responded. The beach was patrolled by 4WD vehicles and off shore was patrolled by the Coastguards and the Helicopter. At 15.00hr a body was found washed up on the beach 1km east of the capsise area.  Rescue services were stood down at 15.08hr.
