This is an introductory course for all members of the family or crew. It applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, PWCs, sea kayaks and waka.
The course is 15 hours in length and leads to the qualification NZ Day Skipper Certificate. Unit Standard 26542 is also available for those who successfully pass the course.
The course consists of five modules which are -
- The boat - parts of a boat, boating equipment, boat handling
- Navigation - the chart, compass, tides and weather, buoys and beacons
- Rules and Regulations - rules of the road at sea, lights and sound signals, navigation and safety rules, skipper responsibility
- Emergencies - distress signals, emergency situations, hypothermia
- Knots - knots, bends and hitches.
