How to Contact the Coastguard Whakatane


Boat to Coastguard - Routine Calls

Coastguard Whakatane encourages all boaties to call Coastguard on leaving port and on returning. Also during the day when moving position and at the advertised Sked times.

For all of these calls, contact the Operator on Repeater Channel 80.


Emergencies Only

In an emergency dial 111 and ask for the Police.

If you are calling from a vessel at sea and have a VHF radio, call on any monitored coastguard VHF marine radio frequency.

Call: "MAYDAY","MAYDAY","MAYDAY" followed by the VESSEL NAME and LOCATION.

Repeat all of this three times. If possible provide details of the emergency and follow any instructions given. If possible, keep calling until you get a response.

  • The Coastguard Whakatane Headquarters building / Communications Centre is located at the Heads, to be found at at the far end of Muriwai Drive. All visitors are welcome during normal hours to visit the Communications Centre and meet the Operator. You can check out the equipment used and the magnificent view of the Whakatane River entrance.

  • We can also cater for community groups or school tours of the premises and the DRV shed and the rescue vessel. If you wish to use this facility, please contact the Operator - Ph: 07 3087110, to arrange suitable times. Please give us a reasonable lead time to enable us to organise one of our volunteers to lead the tour for you.
